COMMUNITY OUTREACH

AAUW at the national level provides graduate school educational funding and legal assistance for women college educators.  The Roseville- South Placer Branch attempts to reach out to the community in a variety of other ways.

We provide two scholarships for re-entry women needing financial aid to attain college degrees. These women begin at Sierra College and funding continues for them until they achieve their educational goals.

Each summer the Branch, through fund raising efforts, sends four or five girls for a weeklong program in science, math and technology, Tech Trek, provided at universities in California.  The California Speech Trek competition encourages high school students to display public speaking skills in a statewide competition. Our Branch provides a venue for local competition and awards first and second place scholarships to the top winners.

Our Branch has had a long-standing partnership with the Roseville Library System and often supports library book drives and Roseville events. Our program committee plans events with community speakers from the cities within our branch—these speakers present current useful information on issues critical to our members and their families.

The Sierra College Connection has also found Branch members participating in Sustainability Days to promote environmental awareness and Civility Panels debating current social issues.

Finally, Branch members are engaged in a variety of community focused events:  collecting toys and food during the holidays, tutoring in local schools, providing care-giver assistance in community programs, assisting at local Academic Decathlon school competitions, serving on election boards and helping at polling places.

AAUW members are committed to their communities and fellow citizens in many ways.
